Google have been testing their car's in all types of environments in America, driving in city traffic, busy highways and on mountainous terrain in all they have clocked up about 300,000 kilometres. Google have recently started releasing data on how their car works and released video showing images of what the on board computer sees and how it detects other vehicles and pedestrians, traffic lights and road signs.
a laser range finder mounted on the roof of the car generates a detailed 3D map of the environment and then compares the laser measurements with maps of the area. there are four radar sensors mounted on the front and bumper of the car and these are able to detect traffic and deal with fast traffic on a motorway.
